Playgroup: My Mama Tribe

We all need a safe place to go where we can find support and encouragement.  Raising children is no easy task.  It can be physically, mentally, and emotionally draining.  I do not live near family so finding a support group has been important to me.  Our local playgroup started as a way to let our children play but it has also become that support group.  The children have become best friends, and the Moms have become my Mama Tribe.

Playgroup Mama Tribe, Parent Savers BlogOur playgroup not only is a great place for our kids to burn off excess energy, socialize, and have some fun, but it is also a great place for our kids to learn from mistakes in a safe and non-judgmental environment.  Let’s face it no toddler is perfect, as much as we would like to believe so, and my children are no exception.  My three year old still has issues sharing and has major meltdowns if he gets too tired or hungry.  Knowing that I am with a group of like-minded parents makes things a lot easier.  If William takes a toy or refuses to give another child a turn and a fight ensues, I don’t have to worry about what the other moms are thinking.  I have their support.

Playgroup also gives our kids a safe place to figure things out on their own and learn how to deal with conflict.  If there is an argument I don’t have to rescue William or his friend immediately, but can give them time to work it out on their own.  That is something I am not comfortable doing around parents I do not know.

Finally our playgroup has become a place where us moms can talk and use each other as sounding boards.  I have gotten so much many great ideas on how to help my children overcome different problems.  It is amazing the wonderful ideas and advice I have gotten from playgroup moms: ideas on how to get my kids to eat better, sleep better, share better and more.  Finally, it is just nice to be around adults and to get some encouragement.  These ladies are my mama tribe!
